The library will once again be promoting “National Emergency Preparedness Week” - May 2-May 8. Linda Dickinson, Wellington County’s Community Emergency Management Coordinator will be visiting each of the fourteen library branches to set up a display of materials that will aid our patrons and visitors in the event of an emergency. Once again there will be a raffle to win two emergency preparedness kits. These kits include 72 hours of emergency items. More information is available on the county’s website at www.wellington.ca and also at www.getprepared.ca. We invite you to visit the library, pick up some valuable information and fill out a ballot for a chance to win an emergency kit.
The library staff has been offered an opportunity to participate in a new form of library training. These training sessions are called “Webinars”. A Webinar is short for web conferencing. In web conferencing participants connect to a computer through a link that has been distributed by e-mail. Once connected to the link the participants enter a one way audience with a speaker who interacts with them. This is called a webcast.
Are you still with me!!!
If there is more than one trainee then a speaker phone is required so that all participants can hear the speaker and interact as a group. Our library resource centre is offering Webinars that train staff to aid patrons when using Auto Repair, Teen Health and Wellness, Ancestry, Canadian Points of View and Career Cruising websites. The library is very excited with this new type of training and we look forward to participating in many more as they become available.
May is also the month that we celebrate that special female in our lives. It may be your Mom, Aunt, Grandmother or special friend. Take time to tell that person how much they mean to you. We get caught up in all of the day-to-day activities that take us away from what is important and that is friendship and caring. So remember that special someone with a call, card or a visit. It doesn’t cost anything; just a moment of your time!
Miss Naomi will once again be hosting a free special event for 6-10 year old children- Saturday May 8 10:30–11:30 am.
Nancy will be hosting the Young Adult Book Club with a discussion of upcoming summer reads. New members are always welcome. This is a great Thursday after school event. The next class will be Thursday May 20, 4–5 pm.
Join us for the afternoon games and craft session (ages 10 and up) on Thursday May 27, 4-5 pm.
Please register for all of the programs listed above.
On a parting note: “Recalling the Past- 40 years ago” column from the Enterprise News, “Marguerite Bryan (Librarian) told the annual meeting of the board that total membership is 609 and there are 5,571 books on file”. The same figures as of March 2010 are 2,439 Arthur library users and there are 16,894 titles in the collection.
Until next month:
Remember knowledge is free; just bring your own container.
