"Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few."
Winston Churchill, September 1940.
On Wednesday, Nov. 4th the premiere viewing of Memories of World War 2, Tales of Arthur Veterans will be shown at Arthur Legion at 7:30pm. The evening is a joint presentation of the Arthur and Area Historical Society and Arthur Lions Club. Everyone is welcome to attend.
During the evening, those in attendance will learn some of the history of Arthur Lions Club and the club’s efforts during the war. A sampling of the DVD will be shown and folks involved will talk about the making of the video. Veterans are expected to attend and a social time will take place at the conclusion of the evening allowing for a mingling of guests.
The DVD is a compilation of stories told by local veterans. The project is sponsored by Arthur and Area Historical Society, edited by Devan Becker and David Stack, narrated by Ian Turner. Student coordinator was Leanne Wright. Wellington Heights Secondary School students in both History and Communication Technology classes participated in the project. The interviews for the video were filmed in June 2008; the project was completed September 2009.
The inspiration for the Veterans DVD grew out of the success of a previous DVD compilation the group put together: War Brides of North Wellington.
Ten veterans of World War 2, currently living in Arthur and area, were interviewed for the DVD. The project was filmed in two nights. Veterans Sam Green, Moira McDougall, Harry Bell, Lloyd Schmidt and Walter Grasley were interviewed the first night. Norm Padley, John Walsh, Garnett Wilson and Ken Waters were interviewed the second evening.
According to Historical Society President David Stack, editing the almost two hours long DVD was the biggest challenge.
The DVD is divided into segments including: Why I Survived; How Did Your Families Feel; If the Germans Won; Women’s War Experiences; Food in the Military; 28 Days Pay; and The War is Over.
Although often somber in nature there are lighter moments within the video.
“The pee in your boot story is humorous -- watch for it,” advised Stack.
Arthur Public Library, Kenilworth Public School, Arthur Public School, St. John’s Catholic School, Wellington Heights Secondary School, Arthur and Area Historical Society and local Veteran’s Museums will receive a copy of the DVD.
