October 23 brought the Centre Wellington Fusion to town. Having just seen this team the week before, the Peewee’s seemed focussed and prepared to tackle the challenge that this game would bring. However, luck was not on our side and the Fusion ended up taking the win with a final score of 2-1.
Not too many details to report from this game. The referee acted like a Grand Marshall as he continuously paraded players from both benches to the penalty box. Josh McKee scored our only goal of the night with a nice rushing play to move the puck down the boards after a beauty pass right on his stick from defenceman Tristan Binkley. Tristan is also the recipient of our Hustle award of this game. He has really stepped up his game this year by consistently winning battles and using his size, strength and competitive attributes to his advantage.
In the story from our first game against the Fusion, I didn’t include the assists since I didn’t have the game sheet at that time. Dennis Coffey, Jason Nauta, Ashley Jackson and Binkley each recorded an assist during that game.
The Peewee Vipers next suited up on Sunday Oct 25 to verse Woolwich at the newly built arena in Elmira.
Woolwich started the scoring but Arthur soon followed suit with McKee tying the score unassisted. Woolwich came back with two more goals in the second period advancing the score to 3–1. Just when the game was about to end Arthur got on the score board again with just .08 seconds remaining. Kyle Stewart snuck the puck past the goalie with the help of Josh Ellis and McKee.
The Vipers had several attempts to score but were not successful. Regardless, the team played a respectable game but were not able to defeat their opponent this time. Final score 3-2 for Woolwich. We’ll get ‘em next time for sure Vipers!
The action was non stop throughout the game and it literally kept the fans on their feet (well actually the fans couldn’t sit as it’s standing room only in the McLeod pad in the Elmira arena). The hustle award for this game goes to Kevin Hutchison for his quick movements between the pipes. Had it not been for the way he pounces and throws those gloves up for a save who knows what the score would have been.
Dundas was back in our house on Oct 27 and again the Vipers proved that it ain’t over till it’s over. This team has a ton of heart and a no quit attitude and that is what prevailed to allow them to secure the win against a talented and speedy Dundas team.
The Vipers opened the scoring in the first period after Coffey dug away at the puck out front of the net sliding a rebound underneath the goalie. Slick skating Auzzie Shaw picked up the assist. The first period would end with a tie after Dundas managed a score late in the period. Dundas widened their lead early in the second but minutes later, after a mad scramble in front of the net, McKee was able to pop the puck by the Dundas tender to finish the period in a tie again.
Fans were treated to some real back and forth action through two full periods of play. This brought us to the start of the third period with Dundas starting to utilize some of that momentum that they so much love to ride on. They would score two more goals throughout the third to move ahead with a score of 4-2. But wait, here’s where that no quit attitude comes in…
With just 1:23 left in the game, our bench staff decided to pull the goalie and send out the extra attacker. With another player in the mix, it caused just enough confusion to allow defenceman Nauta (Digger) to unload one of his powerful wristers which nicely tangled the twine to put us within a goal’s reach of the tie. Now we were hungry for it!
When the time was right, Goalie Kevin rushed to the bench again to send out the extra man. This time Ellis would score on a pass from Nauta to tie the game!
Oh….what an exciting come-back, but wait we were not done yet….
With time ticking down and only seconds left on the clock. Jacob Brownson dazzled the Dundas team and fans alike with some sweet moves to score the final goal of the game. I am sad to report that I missed this goal, but the details that surround it say that he passed the puck to himself through the defenceman’s feet and then flipped a backhand upstairs in the net to secure the win for the Vipers. Must have been a pretty one to watch.
Such a fantastic effort by the whole team to continue pushing forward when the game seemed out of reach late in the third. Hats off to the coaching staff for showing the courage to pull the goalie not once but twice to contribute to this win. It doesn’t always work, but tonight it finished in our favour.
Dundas has only experienced two losses this year both at the hands of our Vipers team.
I have to give the hustle award to Brownie who got the game winner. The coach’s honourable mention list goes to Kyle Stewart who is showing more confidence in his play, Jason Nauta who played upfront on a couple of power plays and looked good doing it, Jacob Benham who continues to compete well in his many battles of these games, Austin Shaw who is doing a good job mixing and Josh (Bubbles) Bowen who is bumping well on ‘D’.
The Hespeler Shamrocks brought their physical selves to town for a visit this past Friday night. Hespeler netted the only score in the first period. Early in the second period, Nauta would find the back of the Hespeler net with a beautiful shot from just inside the blue line. Brownson earned the assist. Shortly after that, Brownie steals the puck from a sleeping Hespeler defenceman to record our second goal of the game. Coffey and Nauta who were forcing pressure in the offensive zone both earned an assist on the play. Hespeler scored again, but seconds later the Vipers would respond. Benham showed some fine hustle moving the puck down the ice. The Hespeler goalie would then stop back to back shots from Coffey and Brownson. The third shot seemed to be the charm when McKee would finally tuck it in just behind the sprawling goaltender. Coffey and Brownson were handed the assists.
Hespeler would then find themselves in penalty trouble for the remainder of the game. In total, they tallied 36 minutes in penalties throughout the game with the majority of penalties coming in the third.
There was no scoring until about the four minute mark of the third when, after a scramble in front of the net, Brownie would tuck in our fourth goal of the game. Hespeler would record one more before the end of the third with a blasting slapshot that snuck through our goalie’s five-hole. It was a non-issue though as in the end as the Vipers would hold on (by their fingernails) to earn the win.
Benham (Benny) showed lots of get up and go in this game and is a deserving recipient of the game’s hustle award.
The day after Halloween we travelled to Dundas. Not sure if we were on a Post Halloween sugar-downer, cursed by a shorter bench due to illness or what exactly happened but we certainly had very little pep in our step on this night. At the five minute mark of the first Brownson would score the first goal of the game on a nice passing play from McKee and Benham. Dundas would rally with four goals in the second. Stewart would score one unassisted for the Vipers on a nice hard shot from a tough angle at the side of the net. McKee would add another on a spinner-ama move keeping the Vipers within one to finish the second period. Dundas would score another later in the third to finish the game 5-3. While this was not our best showing of the year, the Vipers should remain confident that they can strongly compete against this team.
McKee receives the hustle award for this game for his back checking efforts and keen puck movement on our break out plays.
This Vipers team is providing some great entertainment at the ACC on Friday nights. Come on out and help us cheer the Vipers on this Friday night as we face Erin-Hillsburgh at 8:10pm.

Friday evening the Atom Vipers played against Erin/Hillsburgh.
Apparently the boys had a fan (teacher) in the stands and were going to ensure he witnessed the true spirit of “Viper Hockey”.
In the first period Aaron Goetz had a nice breakaway to which Erin/Hillsburgh player decided the only way to stop him was to throw his stick at him.

It was another winning weekend for the Peewee Vipers hockey team. Friday night the kids laced up for a game against the Acton Tanners.
The first period saw an insane amount of penalty minutes dished out to the Acton team, however the Vipers were unable to capitalize on any power plays and the first period would finish scoreless.
