Saturday night the Atom Vipers were home to Cayuga to begin our first round of the OMHA playoffs.
The Vipers took to the ice hungry for a win. First period was a great display of hockey with the boys playing strong defence and Kyle Speers was absolutely OUTSTANDING in net. Cayuga applied the pressure but Kyle was like a wall in net. The first ended with no score.
Second period was once again action packed we had more opportunities and shots on net then in the first but where unable to get one past Cayuga. Finally with 1:12 left to play Wade Green scored a beautiful goal assisted by Aaron Goetz and Taylor Quirke. We ended the second 1-0. Jack Bell, Goetz, Alex Gardner, Jayson Dowling, Gage Dyce and Quirke had some really nice shots on net but again we just couldn't get another one through. Blake Lunn, Zack Benham, Kyle Brunkard and Dareian McNeil made some really great passes to advance the puck in the scoring position as well. Good job boys. The boys really seem to enjoy keeping us fans on the edge of our seats.
Third period the boys turned it up a notch and were giving it their all. Two minutes in the third Jordan Speers scored assisted by Quirke. Cayuga responded three minutes later it was tough goal. For some of us fans especially myself the third was a nerve wracking period. The Vipers never gave up. With less then two minutes to play Brunkard took a penalty for body checking it was a tough call. Cayuga took advantage of the situation and as soon as their penalty ended they pulled their goalie for a six on four. The boys did an outstanding job of holding them off and again Kyle Speers did a great job. The final buzzer was a welcomed sound. We had taken the first game 2–1. Darcy awarded his three stars of the game and Kyle Speers was the first and very well deserved. Wade Green was the third star and again well deserved.
We were off to Cayuga Sunday afternoon for game two. I was unable to make the game and it was a tough loss for our boys as Cayuga won 3–0. With the series tied at one a-piece Friday night’s game should be an interesting one. We meet up with them Friday February 5 at 7:30pm in Arthur. Come on out and cheer the boys on.
