Arthur Fall Fair is one of the best, most successful fairs in the region. The fair’s prosperity comes through a collaborative effort, a necessary multi-partnership. Arthur Agricultural Society members work hard planning the event, keeping it vibrant and fresh while honouring the traditional spirit of the event.
Farmers and home-crafters, the folks who spend time creating, growing, grooming and participating, are the heart of the fair. It wouldn’t be possible without the volunteers, both seen and unseen who are the force that gets things done. Importantly, the people who attend the fair for fun and in celebration of the rich heritage of Arthur’s agricultural community ensure the favourable outcome.
The theme for this year’s fair, held from Friday, September 10 to Sunday, September 12 (the Kick Off Beef BBQ was held Thursday, September 9) is apples. The juicy, healthy fruit will be celebrated with several exhibits including Wellington County Museum’s apple display and an apple peeling contest on Saturday. University of Guelph has provided two booths on Car products and CO2 displays. Keeping with the environmental motif, the Agricultural Society will be demonstrating various ways to “Go Green”.
Start the fair off by viewing the parade, attending the cake auction and the speech portion of the Ambassador competition on Friday evening. Then stroll the grounds in appreciation of the groomed and trained livestock at the many shows throughout the weekend. Touring the arena and the young people’s exhibit proves what a dedicated conglomerate of floral and vegetable gardeners, crafters, sewers, bakers, creative artists, as well as, those with a knack for design and décor reside locally. The businesses in the community and vendors will be out to showcase, demonstrate and sell their items.
Contests of skill including Spaghetti Bridge Building, Chili Cook-off, Talent Show and Riding Lawn and Garden Tractor Pull will test participants and reward the best. Fun attractions like children’s entertainer Erick Traplin, blacksmith “The Iron Anvil”, Hunter/Gymkhana Show and the Western Horse Show have been secured. For children there is the midway, Pet Show, Frog Jumping and the Children’s Activity Centre.
One of the highlights of the weekend, the Crowning of Arthur Fall Fair Ambassador 2010/2011 will take place on Sunday afternoon.
“Organizing something this big with such great people has been quite an adventure,” Agricultural Society President Jennifer McFadden said. “So please come out and enjoy this adventure the Arthur agricultural society has put together for such a great community!”
It isn’t too late to offer to lend a hand and be sure to thank those that made the event possible while you enjoy the weekend.
Fall Fair programs can be picked up at L&M or at Meroon Market and will be sent home with children in the schools.
