Coach Len Coffey’s Peewee Local League team was scheduled to play the same team from Elora for their past two games. Elora is a very strong team, but the Arthur boys (and girls) were not to be intimidated!
In Elora on Nov. 26, defenceman Molly Burr and forward Connor Worsnop were asked to switch positions for the duration of the contest, and neither looked out of place in their new surroundings!
Things looked bleak early, as the home side opened up a 2-0 lead less than six minutes into the game. However, late in the first period, Arthur responded with three goals of their own - in less than a minute. Brandon Thring got things started for the visitors with an unassisted rocket into the top of the net with 4:12 remaining in the period. Just 10 seconds later, and before the supportive Arthur parents had a chance to sit down, Liam McArthur grabbed a loose puck at centre ice and carried it over the blue line before letting go a slap shot. His blast found its way into the top of the net for another Arthur goal.
28 seconds later Gordon Wilman fed a nice pass to Joey Sheppard, who was standing all alone in the faceoff circle. Sheppard fired a slap-shop of his own, which again eluded the Elora goalie and put Arthur into the lead for the first time in the game.
After this out-burst, it remained a one-goal game, with lots of action at both ends of the ice, until Elora scored with just under six minutes remaining in the third period.
With a minute and a half left in the contest, an Elora player was sent in alone on a breakaway. His shot was deflected by Arthur goalie Ryan Plat, and hit the post before the lanky goalie covered it with his trapper. Unfortunately the referee, who was still at the blue-line trying in vain to catch up to the play, signaled a “goal” - much to the dismay of the Arthur fans and players. With their goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Arthur swarmed the Elora zone but could not find the equalizer.
