Midget Vipers have great tourney
December 16, 2011By Dianne Hatch
Friday night the Vipers were off to face the Wildcats at the Elmira arena. With a few boys lacking in sleep from the Pyjama Jama Rama fundraiser held the night before, the Vipers just didn’t have the drive behind them. Woolwich grabbed the lead early in the first and added one more to finish the first with a 2-0 lead. Once again the Wildcats scored first in the second taking a commanding three goal lead. The Vipers were not giving up as AP Josh McKee keeps hitting the puck in the Wildcats crease to get the puck by the goalie. Assists went to AP Dave Cox and Nathan Byne. Before the end of the second the Vipers gave the Wildcats something to think about during the flood and Ryan Holinshead and McKee each pop one in to tie the game 3-3. Assisting on Holinshead’s first goal of the season were Zach Denney and Nick Walsh, while Dave Cox and AP Doug Cox assisted on McKee’s second goal of the night. The Vipers had the momentum heading into the final frame but just didn’t have the energy to finish which resulted in the Wildcats scoring two more to win the game 5-3.
Sunday the Vipers hosted their home tournament with teams from Elma Logan, Embro, Essa, Norwich and Saugeen Shores. The boys were on the ice at 8:30 to face Elma Logan. I wondered how the game might play out as one of the bench staff from Elma Logan was in fine form this morning. Needless to say I think he finally got his Sunday morning coffee in him by games end. Elma Logan hit the scoreboard first midway through the first, but the lead was short lived when Brandon Wilson ties the game off a pass from Walsh. Just 24 seconds later Wilson finds mesh again to give the Vipers the lead. Assists went to Denney and Walsh. The Vipers were playing one of their better games, skating hard, going for the puck and getting the puck in the net. Before the end of the second Wilson scores his third of the game, assisted by Justice Clarke and Matt Smith. The Vipers are able to hold the two goal lead in the final 10 minutes to give them their first win in quite some time.
