On Saturday, July 10, at Varney Motor Speedway, the Stock 4s were ready to rumble, and rumble they did, as Dennis Cremasco orchestrated his first feature win of the year.
Pole sitter Britton Lundy and Billy Lovell battled early for the lead, swapping the top spot with each lap in a frantic pace up front. Bruce Moran then got sideways and slammed the frontstretch wall head on, while Clark Hartman did all he could to stop his car before slamming into Moran’s driver’s side door.
Further back, Jason Tolton and Sherry Smart aggressively raced each other in a battle that no good came from. Smart spun in turn three and, unhappy with his teammate's circumstances, Charles Embro drove into Tolton's car while under caution. The stunt was repeated by Smart herself on the backstretch, and all three were given the black flag and parked for the night.
Up front, Lovell eventually gave way to Dennis Cremasco, with Lundy and Tim Tolton in his wake. As the leaders worked through lapped traffic, Lundy, Tolton and Evan Rydall all wound up in the wall.
Cremasco hung on for his first win of the year, while Hartman recovered for second and Lovell took third. Cremasco and Nick Clarke, who claimed fifth place in the feature, also won their heat races.
An opening lap caution slowed the Street Stock feature for the only time, as Bill Cole took the lead from Brian Wilson and began to check out on the rest of the field. A side-by-side battle for second between Wilson and Jamie Hunt allowed Cole to pull away. Hunt drove possessed, and when the white flag dropped was on the leader’s tail. Cole then opened a two car advantage to claim the win.
In the Late Model feature, Justin McLellan was able to get by front row starters Tommy Robb and Jeff Lotspeich to take the lead. McLellan cruised on to victory, leaving the battle on the track for second. Robb and Chris Van Dusen stayed close for several laps before coming together for a spin in turn two. Making his return to the Late Models at Varney, Steve Smith finished second. McLellan also won both qualifying heats to complete his sweep on the night.
The touring Hurricane Midgets did not disappoint, in a feature that saw multiple drivers take a turn up front. Glen Blaker and Brent McLean had it tough early, with a spin in turn three that brought out the caution flags. On the restart, Brian Woodland used the outside lane to get a run on the lead.
Eager to keep pace, Jeff Blackburn and Dave Carson stayed on Woodland's tail and the top three began to pull away from the pack. Blackburn would eventually get past Woodland to hold the top spot. A little further back, Amanda McCall began storming through the field, but she clipped the wall and spun down the front straightaway.
In the second shocker of the race, Carson clipped the wall on the front stretch and Blackburn, running a close second, could not avoid Carson's car. The two collided and ended up in a pile at the end of the front straight. With the top three eliminated in two consecutive caution incidents, Woodland took back the winner’s spot for good.
