The Arthur Squirt Girls softball team finished off their season this past weekend in Moorefield at their year end tournament. This year the team was a combination of girls who were playing ball for their first time, returning players from last season and players who hadn’t played for a few years.
Throughout the season the team gave their opponents some good competition, however ended up in fifth place despite all of their great efforts. At the tournament the girls came ready to show the teams that they were not going out without a fight. The first game was against Chepstow, who had placed second overall. The girls lost a close game 9–7 and their improved play was commented on by the other coaches. The second game the girls played was against Mount Forest. The girls bats were on fire and we had some great pitching from both Kathryn and Haley along with strong back catching by Mikayla. The girls ended up on top beating Mount Forest 13–6. The next game was against Moorefield, the girls battled back and forth for the first few innings making it anybody’s game. Moorefield started to pull ahead in the bottom of the fourth inning and although the girls played well, ended up losing this game 14–8, which ended their journey for the day.
Along with the great pitching and catching the girls really stepped up their play for the tournament with improved hitting from Chevonne, Autumn, Natalie, Holly, Charlie, Mariah and Megan and fantastic base running and fielding by all the team.
The girls improved their overall standing of fifth in the season to fourth in the tournament, but more importantly greatly improved their ability to pull together as a team and be contenders in the playoffs. Congratulations Twister Sisters, all of your coaches are very proud of you!
A big thank you to the parents and the other coaches, Khayla Janssen and Tom Doherty for making this a fun season. I’ll wrap up this season, the same way we started off every game this year with our favourite cheer “Go Twister Sisters and Tom!”
